Inviting People to Your Team

To add people to your Team, make sure you’re logged into Cloud and in your Team’s workspace (use the drop-down menu in the top-left corner to make sure it’s showing your team’s name) Click on the cog icon at the bottom of the sidebar in your Team’s workspace to head to your Team’s settings, scroll down, then click on the Invite Member button.

In the Members section of your Team’s Settings, you’ll see the person you’ve invited listed along with an Invite pending badge next to their name to indicate they haven’t accepted your invitation yet.

Types of Team Members

When you create a new Team member, you can choose to give them one of two access types:

  • Contributors can use Sketch to edit and upload documents. Your Sketch for Teams bill is based on the number of Contributors in your team.
  • Viewers can log in to Cloud to view and comment on Team documents. You can have as many Viewers as you like in your Team for free. Viewers cannot open Sketch

Note: If you’ve created a Team, you’ll automatically be a Contributor. You can change your Access rights to Viewer, but your Team will always be billed for at least one Contributor, even if you haven’t assigned anyone to that role.

You can also give every Team member one of two roles:

  • Admins can manage your Team settings, members and billing.
  • Members can’t manage your Team in any way.

Note: If you’ve created your Team, you’ll automatically be an Admin and you can’t be downgraded to a Member.

How to Upgrade and Downgrade Team Members

To change a Team member’s access type (Contributor or Viewer) or role (Admin or Member), click the Edit button next to their name in your Team’s settings page.

Note: If you upgrade a Team member to a Contributor, you’ll be charged based on the remaining time in your current billing period (monthly or annually). If you downgrade a Team member from a Contributor to a Viewer you’ll still be charged for the Contributor role they had during your current biling period. You can reassign a Contributor role to someone else in your team at no extra cost.

How to Remove Team Members

To remove a Team member, click on the Edit button next to their name in your Team’s settings page, then choose Remove from Team. When you remove someone from your team, all of their documents will remain in your shared workspace.

Library Styles

Along with Symbols you can share and sync Text and Layer Styles using Libraries. They’ll appear in the Components Panel and in the Components popover under Appearance in the Inspector. You can also access Text and Layer Styles via the Insert menu, and Like Symbols, Library Styles have a link icon next to their group name to indicate they’re part of Library.

How to Edit Library Styles

If you’re using a Library Style (Layer Styles or Text Styles) in your document and want to edit a Layer that uses it, you’ll have a few options to choose from in the Appearance panel in the Inspector:

  • Before you make any edits, you can choose to Create a new local Style from the currently selected Style. This will unlink the style from the Library and create a new local Style in your document.
  • Alternatively, you can choose to Detach the Style from its master, to unlink it from the Library but not create a new local Style.
  • If you make edits to a Library Style, you can choose Create New Style and Replace to unlink it from the Library, create a new local Style and apply those changes to all layers in your document with that Style applied. Alternatively you can choose Reset Style to revert your changes.
  • As long as the Style is not part of a Third Party Library, you can also choose Edit Style in Library to open the Library document that this style belongs to.

Note: Editing a Style in the original Library document will update that Style for anyone using that Library.

How to Create Library Presets

As well as Symbols, Text and Layer Styles, you can use Libraries to sync and share solid, gradient or image fill presets. To create a Library Preset for a color, for example, select a color in the fill popover of your Library document and add it as a preset under Document Colors.

Now, when you’re working in a document that uses that Library, click on the title above the presets in the fill popover and select the Library’s name to view all of the available Library Presets.

Adding Hotspots

Hotspots give you more control than Links and are useful if you want to create a clickable area that’s larger than a single Layer.

To add a Hotspot, choose Insert > Hotspot (or press H), then click and drag to draw your Hotspot Area. After that, click the Artboard you want your Hotspot to link to.

You can edit your Hotspot’s animation and target Artboard, in the Inspector, just like you can with .

How to Fix the Position of a Hotspot

Select your Hotspot and then choose the Fix position when scrolling checkbox in the Inspector to fix its position on the canvas even as the rest of your Layers scroll.

How to Use Hotspots with Symbols

If you include a Hotspot as part of a Symbol, you can reuse that same Symbol but individually override its Hotspot’s target. You can also override the Hotspot’s target to “None” if you don’t want it to link to another Artboard.

How to Hide Links and Hotspots

Choose View > Show Prototyping (or press Ctrl + F) to hide the different paths that represent Prototyping Links and Hotspots. You can also change their color under the Canvas section in .

Text Fields

These shortcuts apply when you’re editing a numerical field in the Inspector:

Tab Focus Inspector
Tab Select next field
Tab Select previous field
Enter Confirm change
Escape Clear change
Increase value by 1
Decrease value by 1
Increase value by 10
Decrease value by 10
Increase value by 0.1
Decrease value by 0.1
click and drag label Adjust value in increments of 10
click and drag label Adjust value in increments of 0.1

Resizing Shortcuts

When you’re adjusting the height or width of a layer, the following characters give you more control over the starting position of the resize.

L Scale from the left (default)
R Scale from the right
T Scale from the top (default)
B Scale from the bottom
C M Scale from the center / middle

How to Use Math Operators

You use these math operators in all numerical inputs of the Inspector.

+ Add
- Subtract
* Multiply
Divide
% Resize layer to a percentage of its parent group or Artboard

How to Set Individual Radius Values

When you select a rectangle, you can specify a different value in the radius field for each corner in the Inspector by using ; as a spacer (e.g. ).

Export Fields Shorthand

In the Scale field of the Make Exportable panel in the inspector, the following characters can customize your export sizes.

X Scale multiplier. Eg, will export at twice the size
H Export your layer at a specific height. Eg,
W Export your layer at a specific width. Eg,

Sharing a Library

There are a few different ways to share a Library with others — using a sync service, sharing via Cloud, or uploading to a server and using RSS for updates.

Using a sync service (like Dropbox or Google Drive) to share your Library is as simple as uploading the Sketch document and sharing it with the people that need it. They’ll get a notification in Sketch any time you update it.

Using Cloud to share your Library is also simple. Simply upload your document to Sketch Cloud, open its settings, check Use as Library, then click Save Changes.

Anyone you share this Library document within Sketch Cloud can click the Add Library to Sketch button in the document’s overview to add it as a Library and receive notifications in Sketch when you update it.

Sharing a Library with a team on Cloud

If you’re part of a team, sharing and discovering Libraries is even simpler. Upload your document to your team workspace, click the cog icon to open settings, check Use as Library, then click Save Changes.

Head back to the Mac app and you’ll find all of the Cloud Libraries for any team you belong to under the Libraries tab in Preferences. You can scroll through and find the Libraries you need, and when you want to use a Library, just click Install.

Using RSS and a server to share your Library is a little more complicated. First, you’ll need to host your Library document on a server. Then, you’ll need to create an XML file like this:

Inside the XML file, you’ll need to edit the following:

  •   —  The Library’s name that you want to show in Sketch
  • — The default thumbnail URL that Sketch will attempt to use for your library. It should point to a publicly accessible image URL.
  • —  The information between the item tags is what you’ll want to update when you create new versions of your library. You only need one item tag within your feed.

In the the item tag, for each update you’ll need to include:

  •   — The date the library update was published in the RFC822 format.
  • —  The enclosure tag has three attributes: url, type & sparkle:version. The URL should point directly to your Library document’s server location, type should be “application/octet-stream” and finally sparkle:version is a number that should increment with each new update.

Make sure to serve both your XML feed and your Sketch file using https URLs.

Finally, use a tool like the Meyerweb URL encoder to encode your XML feed URL and add it on to the following:

Enter the full URl (from through to the end your encoded URL) into your browser to open Sketch and add your shared Library.

Adding Links

The quickest way to create a Prototype is to add a Link between two Artboards. You can add Links from any layer to any Artboard.

To add a Link, select a layer, choose + next to Prototyping in the Inspector (or press W), then click on an artboard you’d like to link your layer to.

How to Edit Links

In the inspector, you can choose how a Link’s transition will look using the Animation buttons and change which Artboard a Link takes you to using the Target drop-down menu.

Select “Previous Artboard” in the Target drop-down menu, to tell Sketch to return to whichever Artboard you were previewing before the current one. This is helpful when you have lots of Links leading to a single Artboard.

How to Remove a Link

Choose Prototype > Remove Links from Selection, set your Link’s target to “None” or click the trash icon in the Prototyping section of the Inspector to remove a Link.

Entypo.

Iconjar

Document Colors.

Organizing Symbols

How to Create Symbol Groups

To group Symbols together in the Components Panel and Insert menu, name them using the format: . For example, two Symbols named and will become part of a group named .

Note: You will need to have two or more Symbols in a group before they’ll appear in their own submenu.

Organizing Symbols in the Components Panel

You can also organize your Symbols via the Components Panel. Just double click on any Symbol or group to rename it. You can drag and drop Symbols into an existing group or create a new group by simply dragging one Symbol on top of another.

Symbols in the Components Panel are ordered alphabetically.

Using the Symbols Page

Sending Symbol masters to the Symbols page can help keep things organized, especially with complex designs. It also helps to reduce confusion between using a Symbol master or instance.

To manually move a Symbol master, drag it onto the Symbols page title in the Layer List, or control-click on it and choose Send to “Symbols” Page.

Sharing Cloud Documents

In the Mac app From the Documents window, you can Control-click on any Cloud document and choose Copy Link to copy a link to the document in Cloud to your clipboard.

In an open document, click on the Cloud button in the toolbar and choose Copy Link to copy a link to the document in Cloud to your clipboard.

You can also choose Manage Share Settings… to open the document’s share settings in Cloud in your web browser. From here, you can select who can see your document and if they’re able to comment on it, download it or use it as a Library.

Tip: You can find both Copy Link and Manage Share Settings… in the menu bar under File > Cloud as well.

Note: If you’re viewing an older of a document in Cloud, you can copy and paste its URL to link specifically to that version. The URL for the document overview will always link to the most recent version.

Borders

You can add as many borders as you like to your layers, with different thicknesses, colors and blend modes.

Borders can be a solid color, or have a linear, radial or angular gradient fill.

Tip: You can quickly show or hide borders on any layer by pressing B.

How to Set a Border Position

For closed shapes, you can place borders on the inside, outside or center of its outline. For open paths, the only option is center.

Border options (left to right): Inside, Center, Outside.

How to Customize Borders

Click the settings icon next to the Borders title to bring up options for caps, ends, arrows and dashed borders:

  1. For line layers and open paths, you can choose from three types of border end: Butt cap (Draws the border right to the vector point), Round cap: (Creates a rounded, semi-circular end to a path that extends past the vector point) or Projecting cap (Similar to the rounded cap, but with a straight edges).

  2. For open and closed paths with three or more points (creating corners) you can choose from three types of join: Miter join: (Creates an angled join), Round join: (Creates a rounded corner for the border with a radius relative to the border thickness) or Bevel join (Creates a chamfered edge on the border corner).

  3. For line layers, you can choose arrowheads for the start and end of the path using the drop-down menus. To switch which ends they appear on, choose Layer > Path > Reverse Order.

  4. To create dashed lines, enter a value in the Dash field to set the length of the dashes. The Gap field, which sets the distance between dashes will automatically match this unless you set it to something different. To reset the the Gap value and have it match again, delete anything in that field.

Tip: To create a dotted line, set the end type to a round cap, then set the dash value to 0. Adjusting the gap distance will change the look of your dotted border.
